National Black History Month

Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month is an annual observance in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as a remembrance of individuals and events of importance in the African diaspora.  The celebration is held annually in the United States and Canada in February and in the United Kingdom in October.

In 1926 historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be “Negro History Week.”  This week was selected since it coincides with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12th and of Frederick Douglass on February 14th, both of which were celebrated together by Black communities since the late 19th century.
